Shoot 3: London Journey - Work Record:

Aim of shoot:

For my third exam based shoot I will be continuing from my pervious London shoot, but this time not narrowed down to signs. I will be looking at general London journeys, this could be through people walking around the streets, pets, vehicles trains ect. My aim for this shoot will be to capture different types of journeys in London. I want this idea to be considered as simply as possible with it not being over complicated this is show that simple actions such as riding a bike can still be considered as a journey.

Development of ideas:

The work of William Eggleston is where i began my research for this idea. Eggleston is an American based photographer capturing many different American settings that can be deemed as journeys. His work has helped me to think about the types of images that I want to produce as well as think about my composition and editing.

The actual shoot:

I began my shoot in London Liverpool Street Station. I was looking at capturing people leaving/ arriving and just getting on with their everyday life. This idea worked well as i was able to get some effective images that fit in with my ideas. Below are examples of my work.

This image shows a line of people leaving the train station on a escalator. This image was photographed with a shutter speed of 1/640, aperture of 4.5f and ISO 100. What i find most interesting about this image is the composition, i like the low down angle that this image was taken allowing you see the people getting to the top of the escalator. I think that the use of tone here adds to the idea of depth here making the image appear longer.

This image was taken with a shutter speed of 1/60 p/s, an aperture of 5.6 and ISO 100. This is another example of this idea, the image of a train is an example of a mode of transport that it able to take people on their journeys. Some are just daily journeys to work where as some could be new steps in someones life, i.e moving to a new place. The tone of this image also adds a concept of depth making the image more interesting.

Shoot 2: Journey through signs - Work Record:

Aim for shoot:

For my second exam shoot I decided to photograph signs in London and how by naming a street or showing a direction they are able to show a journey. I decided that would have part of my exam shoots exploring a different idea that I am covering in my main unit. This second shoot will be a small shoot that I conduct at the same time as my third shoot. I think that by showing signs I can look at a simple way of showing journey's. I.e a street name can be a journey to visit a friend, or where you live, it can be a current step in your own personal journey.

Development of idea:

For this particular shoot I hadn't found any research that supported this idea as it was something that a came up with alone. I decided that London would be a good place for m to shoot as it has many different streets with different styles, as well as a variety of general signs that would be fitting for my project.

The actual shoot:

This is an example of my work from this shoot. I decided to make a multiple imagery formed from 4 of the different street signs that I photographed. Within the image itself you are able to see part of the journey that I went on during this exam by looking at the street names. One thing that I like about this image is the fact that the composition of each of the photos are all different. It allows each of the images to have a sense of originality and difference, while being edited and classed in the same way. I decided to crop most of these images slightly as I wanted the actual street sign itself to be the focus and not the background it had. I decided to use tone for this image as I felt that it balance them all out nicely and made the image more attractive to the eye.

Another way that I was photographing during this shoot was looking at signs around train stations and on platforms. This ranged from the sign showing the name of the station to the departure board at Liverpool Street Station. Below are examples of this.

This image was shot with a shutter speed of 1/400 p/s, an aperture of 13f and ISO 400. One thing that stands out in this image is the bright colour, its bold and makes a statement essentially doing its job as it is there to be noticed by people when arriving at the station. I like the composition of this image as I think that it is more interesting than if it was taken with a direct view.

This image was taken with a shutter speed of 1/60 p/s, an aperture of 4.5f and ISO 400. This is another example of station signs, the aim of this sign is to help to direct people to the correct platform. I think that this image examples this as it shows it clearly and effectively something that the sign does. The relation to my topic that these images have is that they are noticble while people are travelling on their journeys. It helps people to know where they are i.e Hackney station and where they need to go to continue their journeys.
